Laura H. Backus, Esq. specializes in labor and employment law and represents clients in a wide range of employment areas, before state and federal agencies. Her experience includes: collective bargaining disputes, discharge, drug and alcohol disputes, FAA, Department of Labor, NTSB, employment Arbitration and Mediation. In addition, she continues to advise clients on matters related to the Family Medical Leave Act, EEOC, and complex benefits disputes, to name a few.
She began her career as Assistant Counsel for Georgia Baptist Health Care System, Inc. which consisted of four hospitals, nursing homes, home health agencies, LifeFlight Aeromedical Transport Services and the Verdrey Center for Pastoral Care and Counseling. After three years of dedicated, health-care directed service, she left to the serve as General Counsel to the pilots of AirTran Airways, Inc. where she remained for seven years. Ms. Backus was then hired as Senior Contract Administrator, representing the airline pilots in the service of US Airways, Group, Inc.
Ms. Backus is a graduate of Mercer University’s School of Law and is also a graduate of Mercer University, with a degree in Spanish and Political Science. Ms. Backus is a member of the Georgia Bar Association and also a member of the State Bar’s Aviation Law Section as well as the Labor and Employment Section. Since 2004, Ms. Backus has annually served as a guest lecturer at Mercer University School of Law on the topics of Ethics and Professionalism as well as Corporate Counsel and is a member of the Law School’s Career Panel. In 2011, Ms. Backus was selected as one the “50 Women You Need to Meet” in the Atlanta area. She resides in Atlanta, Georgia with her family.
